Go to sectionKale (Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala, also known as Brassica oleracea var. virids) – a green leafy plant that has been cultivated as a food crop since 2000 BC1 – is a prominent member of the Brassicaceae botanical family, which has been gaining popularity for its widely studied health benefits.
But did you know that kale’s seeds, in addition to its leaves, are packed with molecules that offer precious nutrients to our body? In particular, black kale seeds are a valuable source of glucoraphanin, a compound that the myrosinase activity – by specific bacteria of our gut microbiota – metabolizes into sulforaphane (SFN). SFN is an active isothiocyanate with powerful antioxidant properties, which plays a key role in the detoxification and protection of numerous organs, including the skin and the liver.2
That’s why we’ve developed PureBKale™: an innovative nutraceutical based on an aqueous dry extract exlusively from 100% italian Tuscan black kale seeds, which guarantees high levels of glucoraphanin (≥17%) to maximize SFN’s significant beneficial effect to support of the body’s detoxification and purification processes.
Both in vitro and in vivo studies have explored SFN’s multi-faceted approach to detoxifying the body. It can effectively interact with the Keap1-Nrf2-ARE signaling pathway and suppress the inflammatory regulator NF-κB; these actions result in a series of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory events: a decrease in the production of inflammatory cytokines, an increase in the activity of antioxidant phase-II enzymes, and the prevention of cell damage and death due to oxidative stress products such as acetaldehyde from alcohol.2,3,4
This detoxifying activity means SFN plays an important role in protecting the skin and improving its natural aging process. In particular, this compound can induce the expression of NQO1, an enzyme that prevents the generation of reactive oxygen species triggered by UV radiation, thus lowering the chances of sunburn and aiding in the prevention of skin cancer.5
The liver is another organ in which SFN’s effects have been extensively researched. Through modulation of the Nrf2 and FGF21 signaling pathways, SFN can inhibit fat buildup (lipogenesis) and oxidative stress, and instead promote anti-inflammatory processes and enhanced breakdown of fatty acids, improving liver metabolism.6
The distinguishing feature of PureBKale™ as a nutraceutical lies in the excellent quality of its core primary ingredient. Right from the start, Indena® conducted a thorough screening of over 20 seed samples from different varieties of kale, to identify Brassica oleracea L. var. acephala as the best ally for detoxification.
This effort has allowed the development of an extract with a significantly high concentration of the SFN precursor glucoraphanin, standardized at a minimum concentration of 17%, achieved without the use of solvents.
Indena® also takes pride in PureBKale™’s all-Italian Tuscan black kale seed supply chain, working in harmony with local communities to ensure an environmentally friendly production process.
