Go to sectionOften defined as the “living fossil”, Ginkgo biloba tree is the only survivor of a genus originated 150 million years ago.1 Ginkgo leaves are well-known for their content of a wide variety of medically active chemicals, most notably terpenoids (ginkgolides and bilobalide) and flavonoids.2
Ginkoselect® is a standardized dry extract from Ginkgo biloba L. leaves. In an extensive review, the activity of Ginkgo biloba leaf extract is described as "polyvalent," because of its action on several physiological functions.2
Ginkgo leaf extract is useful in keeping cerebral and peripheral vascular health, as well as in keeping to a minimum ageing effects such as dizziness, ringing in ears and short-term memory deterioration.1
Both flavonoid and ginkgolide constituents are involved in the free radical scavenging and antioxidant effects of Ginkgo Biloba leaf extract, by leveling reactive oxygen species tissue levels and modulating membrane lipid peroxidation.2 With regard to its "anti-stress" effect, the extract acts via its ginkgolide constituents to normalize the expression of the peripheral benzodiazepine receptor of the adrenal cortex.2
A healthy cerebral and vascular function is important for a healthy brain function, also determinant for social behavior and sleep1. During aging, maintaining a healthy cerebral function with Ginkgo extract can be considered very helpful.
Ginkoselect® is effective thanks to its formulation characterized by a high concentration of ingredients, such as flavonoids and terpene lactones.
Flavonoids content, expressed as flavoneglycosides, terpene lactones (Ginkgolides A, B, C and bilobalide) and Ginkgolic acids are evaluated according to European Pharmacopoeia rules.
