In the environmental and economic sciences sustainability is a condition of development that can ensure the needs’ satisfaction of the present generation - without compromising the possibility for future generations to realize their own.

For four days, in New York, the world of Pharma has launched a new season of collaborations, projects, and ideas. Not that the industry had stopped before, but the global shock of the pandemic has imposed a certain caution on investments, in projects. A period in which we questioned the nature of our work, forced to react to the frequent unforeseen and to the continuous radical changes. In this context, the DCAT week was an opportunity to compare the different visions of development planned in the last two years. And almost all of them start with the word sustainability.


THE LIGHTNESS OF THE INDUSTRY

Today nearly all the presentations, documents, and projects contain the word sustainability. At DCAT it wasn’t just a word used to embellish an event. It was sustainability in all its forms that guided the comparisons: starting from the link with business continuity (DCAT topic of last year) that includes the themes of constant sourcing, reliable logistics, and a respectful relationship with the territory from which we operate.
The territory topic linked to environmental sustainability represents a crucial problem for the industry, which has finally understood that, in the long term, the exploitation of the environment without brakes can be deadly for business.
The theme of sustainability consists of multiple factors that are summed up in the idea of a virtuous balance where all the elements involved contribute to lightening the impact of the industry on the environment.


SUSTAINABILITY, THE REAL ONE: CDMO

Sustainability is a systemic element, it cannot apply only to one part of the process.The key is therefore to be able to design circular supply chains that have sustainability in mind.

With these premises, we can say that we felt at home during DCAT Week 2022. Because sustainability has been the basis of Indena’s work since its foundation. A choice that has not always been easy or convenient.This attention also implies economic efforts that may be important in the short term. But this approach has benefited Indena, a company owned by a family that - for a hundred years - has been directing its fate and indicating its direction.
