This herbaceous perennial plant, a member of the Valerianaceae family, is native to Europe and Asia. It has been used since the time of early Greece and Rome for medical purposes to treat nervousness, trembling, heart palpitations and headache.
Its pharmacological effects have been associated with the constituents of volatile oils, monoterpens, valeropotriates and sesquiterpens. Among them, the valerenic acid inhibits enzyme-induced breakdown of GABA (ϒ-amino butyric acid) in the brain leading to sedation.
Indeed, valerian is taken orally in order to treat insomnia, anxiety, restlessness and mood disorders (e.g depression). It is characterized by anxiolytic, tranquilizing and sleep-inducing effects that have been highlighted in animal and clinical studies.
