Technology: the state-of-the-art for environmental impact

Technology is our greatest ally in innovating our business, optimizing the use of natural resources, and turning our footprint into positive environmental impact. That’s why our facilities have always invested in state-of-the-art equipment, not only for best-in-class production but also for improved efficiency and energy self-production.

Nature provides us with invaluable inspiration and raw materials: but only technology can help us protect our planet – and the People who live on it.

  • White Certificates awarded in 2021: 1,300 (Italy’s energy efficiency program sets increasing goals for major companies every year. Those able to generate energy efficiency, like Indena, receive certificates that they can sell).
  • We participate in the European Union’s Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS), which supports energy-intensive industries in reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

WHAT WE DO TO RESPOND TO CLIMATE CHANGE

We can keep growing only in the name of sustainability, actively tackling one of the most urgent global challenges we have ever confronted: climate change.

WE AVOID 5,117 TONS OF CO2-eq EMISSIONS PER YEAR
Having installed state-of-the-art equipment at our production sites – including a cogeneration plant, a steam turbine and boiler system for energy generation, and photovoltaic panels – allows us to reduce our emissions every year.

WE HAVE A DEDICATED ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
We have appointed a specific committee to oversee environmental issues, maintain standards and make progress. Our European plants have already earned the ISO 14001 certification, and all the others will soon implement similar certified systems.

Our roadmap to lower emissions

The smart use of energy is rooted in our corporate philosophy. Indena has always been oriented and committed to saving energy, reducing consumption and achieving high levels of energy self-production. Our biggest goal is to manage growing energy needs in a sustainable way: a complex challenge that requires a variety of interconnected actions.

Reduce energy needs

  • All the electric engines in our plants consume less than average, because they fall into the highest levels of efficiency for their category (according to Regulation (EC) No. 640/2009):
    - Small engines are IE3 class;
    - Big engines are IE4 class.
  • We use inverters (electrical devices which convert direct current into alternating current) to reduce energy waste: at the moment, electric engines equipped with inverters use 1/8 of the energy compared to those without.

  • We recover about 600 MWh every year by simply exploiting the difference in pressure between the steam produced by our boiler in Settala (32 bar) and normal levels (16 bar), to make a turbine spin. By not resorting to external sources of energy, we avoid the emission of 277 tons of CO2-eq.

  • We set up a corporate shuttle service, currently used by over 60 employees mainly in the Settala site. Day after day, this has avoided the emission of a significant amount of CO2 over time.

  • Our Tours (France) site has added a new building with state-of-the-art efficiency solutions, which rationalize energy flows to achieve higher performance and decrease overall consumption.

Optimize efficiency

  • In 2016, we installed a high-efficiency natural gas cogeneration plant in our production site in Settala. It produces 16,566 MWh per year, in the form of both electric and thermal energy. The former is used by our manufacturing machines, while the latter is employed by an absorber to cool down the premises. This has allowed us to save 1,699 metric tons of oil equivalent (TOEs) in 2021, avoiding 2,500 tons of CO2-eq emissions.

  • All machines (i.e. compressors and chillers) are constantly monitored to verify their efficiency, and replaced with better performing versions if necessary.

  • We promote continuous improvement in buildings’ energy efficiency, both at production facilities and offices, to achieve higher performance through the rationalization of energy use and flows:
    · Coatings on our buildings in plants;
    · Insulated roofs, windows and doors;
    · Low-consumption light bulbs;
    · Sensors to automatically regulate when lights switch on and off.

  • We revamped the thermal power plant in Settala to boost its efficiency, by adjusting it to the real needs of the site.

Leverage renewables

  • We reuse exhausted biomasses through external partners to recover energy that would otherwise be wasted: through a sophisticated form of solar energy accumulation, they can produce biogas by decomposition and thus replace fossil fuels.

  • We are equipping all of Indena’s sites with state-of-the-art photovoltaic panels. All in all, we will go from 2,913 MWh self-produced renewable energy in 2022 (avoiding 1,340 tons of CO2-eq emissions) to 5,013 MWh in 2023, adding 2,100 MWh and reducing CO2 emissions by an additional equivalent of 1,000 tons.

  • We have been using renewable energy at the Indena plants and headquarters for years. By the end of 2023, we will further implement renewable energy sources, giving our capabilities for energy self-production a crucial boost.

OUR GOAL: SELF-PRODUCE 67% OF THE ENERGY WE NEED BY 2023, OF WHICH 23% FROM STEAM GENERATED WITH RENEWABLE SOURCES.
